SDC 2015

JETs from all over Shizuoka Prefecture will be coming together for this year’s Skill Development Conference (SDC) to be held over 12 and 13 of November.

In keeping with tradition, all 2nd year and above ALTs will be presenting workshops or teaching bazaar activities on topics ranging from how to start a lesson plan, to how to prepare for a speech contest to how to go about learning Japanese in Japan. SDC theme for this year is: Setting Team-Teaching Goals. Over the two days, SDC Committee members will facilitate dedicated sessions to explore this theme.

To make the SDC relevant to attending JTEs, CLAIR will deliver workshops that focus on improving communication with ALTs. We have guest presenter Dr. Gregory Glasgow , Language Lecturer and Coordinator, New York University School of Professional Studies and English Language Specialist, Embassy of the United States to Tokyo, to deliver workshops geared towards delivering the English lesson in English and making communicative assessment activities more relevant to English classrooms across Shizuoka. We are also joined by Marcus Springer (former Shizuoka JET and current Lecturer at the Shizuoka University of Art and Culture) to help ALTs and JTEs find new ways to foster student motivation, increase the implementation of communicative activities in class and helping JETs think of their next step after JET.

The annual Shizuoka SDC is the only formal opportunity where all ALTs in the geographical Shizuoka Prefecture can get together  and network with not only each other, but with attending JTEs and external presenters. We are honored by the presence of Stephen G. Kovacsics, Principal Officer, Consulate of the United States to Nagoya, Japan, for a meet and greet with Shizuoka JETs at the end of the first day of this year’s SDC.

We hope this year’s SDC to be a stellar success by aiding ALTs and JTEs alike to reflect on team-teaching issues and practices throughout the prefecture.
